A PhysX 5 module with PXTGI lighting technology was developed for the Godot 4 game engine.

A PhysX 5 module with PXTGI lighting technology was developed for the Godot 4 game engine.

A developer named uno1982 from Wild Ox Studios has unveiled a major NVIDIA PhysX 5 physics engine integration module for Godot 4, introducing a new lighting technology called PXTGI. The project aims to give the open source engine access to NVIDIA's modern physics simulation capabilities along with a global illumination system built on top of it.

The module targets developers who need more advanced physics behavior than what the built in Godot physics servers currently provide. PhysX 5 offers improved rigid body simulation, better handling of large numbers of interacting objects, and more stable stacking and collision resolution. Bringing it into Godot 4 required building a bridge between the engine's node system and the PhysX SDK, which the developer has packaged as a usable module.

PXTGI, the lighting component bundled with the integration, is described as a technique that works alongside the physics data to produce more realistic indirect lighting in scenes. The approach appears to use the spatial information from the physics simulation to inform how light bounces and propagates through an environment, which could benefit level designers working on interior spaces and complex geometry.

The release is aimed at the Godot community, which has been steadily growing as developers look for alternatives to proprietary engines. Adding PhysX 5 support gives teams another option for projects that depend on accurate physics, such as simulation tools, vehicle systems, and physics heavy gameplay prototypes. The developer has not yet detailed performance benchmarks or platform support, but the module is expected to attract attention from studios evaluating Godot for larger 3D projects. Further updates on the integration are anticipated as testing continues.
