Social scientist and bestselling author Arthur Brooks recently spoke at a University of St. Thomas Finding Forward event, where he examined what he calls a modern meaning crisis and offered practical ways to address it.
Brooks argued that many people today confuse happiness with pleasure, chasing short-term gratification while neglecting the deeper sources of fulfillment. According to him, real happiness comes from three key ingredients: enjoyment, satisfaction, and meaning. Enjoyment involves shared experiences with others, satisfaction comes from accomplishing hard things, and meaning is found in serving something larger than oneself.
He also pointed to technology as a double-edged sword. While digital tools connect people across distances, they often replace face-to-face interaction and fuel comparison, anxiety, and isolation. Brooks suggested that limiting screen time and investing in real relationships can help reverse these effects.
The talk drew on research from psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy, blending data with personal stories. Brooks encouraged the audience to build habits that support long-term well-being, such as gratitude, service, and meaningful work.
His message was clear: happiness is not a destination but a practice, and it requires intentional effort rather than passive consumption.
