Students in the Coronado Unified School District robotics program recently got hands-on experience with underwater technology during a training session with U.S. Navy engineers. The Coronado Robotics Academy held the Remote Operated Vehicle session on September 10 at the BBMAC pool.
The event gave students a chance to work directly with naval engineers and learn how underwater vehicles operate in real-world conditions. Participants built and maneuvered their own remotely operated vehicles in the pool, testing design choices and troubleshooting problems as they went. Working alongside Navy personnel offered students a look at how the same principles they study in class apply to actual naval operations.
The session combined engineering fundamentals with practical problem solving. Students had to think about buoyancy, propulsion, and control systems while adapting their designs to the water environment. Navy engineers provided guidance and shared their experiences working with underwater technology in the field.
Program organizers said the collaboration was designed to connect classroom learning with career pathways in science, technology, engineering, and math. For many students, it was their first close look at the kind of work done by Navy engineers and technicians.
The academy plans to continue offering similar training opportunities that give students practical exposure to robotics and engineering fields.
