The Defense Innovation Unit is looking for private investors to back companies working on counter unmanned systems technology. The effort targets firms building tools to detect, track, and disable hostile drones, a capability military planners now treat as urgent.
Under the new solicitation, applicants must hold at least $100 million in capital and show a track record of writing checks averaging $5 million into companies tied to U.S. national security work. Those thresholds are meant to filter out smaller funds that cannot sustain long development cycles or follow on funding rounds.
Counter drone work has drawn growing attention as cheap aerial platforms reshape battlefields and threaten bases, ships, and critical infrastructure. Existing defenses often struggle against swarms, low flying targets, and improvised payloads, leaving room for new sensors, jammers, interceptors, and software that ties them together.
The unit has not named specific companies or set a public deadline for selections. Interested investors will need to demonstrate both financial capacity and a history of supporting defense focused portfolios. The push reflects a broader shift toward pulling private capital into technologies the Pentagon wants fielded faster than traditional contracting allows.
