Environmental Clean Technologies Ltd has finished building its pilot Rapid Electrothermal Mineralisation system, a step forward in tackling persistent chemical pollutants. The company announced the milestone, calling it a key achievement in advancing its remediation technology for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS.
The REM system uses electrothermal heating to break down these "forever chemicals" at high temperatures, converting them into harmless mineral byproducts. PFAS are widely used in industrial and consumer products and are notoriously difficult to destroy because of their strong carbon-fluorine bonds. They have been linked to health risks and are found in groundwater, soil, and even drinking water supplies.
ECT said the completed pilot unit will allow the company to run larger-scale tests, refine the process, and demonstrate the technology's effectiveness to potential partners and customers. The company is targeting applications in waste treatment, contaminated site remediation, and industrial water management.
The move comes as regulators worldwide tighten limits on PFAS in drinking water and the environment. ECT's approach aims to offer a more energy-efficient and complete destruction method compared to incineration or chemical treatment. The company plans to use data from the pilot to support commercial deployment and scale-up efforts.
