Empathy, Not Just Tech, Drives AI Success in Organizations

Kristin L. Milchanowski took the stage at Summerfest TECH to deliver a message that cut through the usual hype around artificial intelligence. While the latest AI tools dazzle with their capabilities, she argued that true organizational success depends on something far less flashy: empathy.

Business leaders today are navigating a storm of new challenges as AI adoption accelerates across industries. The pressure to implement the latest models and automation systems is intense, but Milchanowski warned that technology alone cannot solve the human problems that come with change. Workers feel anxious about job displacement, teams struggle with new workflows, and trust in leadership often erodes when decisions feel cold and data-driven.

She urged executives to slow down and focus on the people side of the equation. Listening to employee concerns, communicating transparently about how AI will be used, and involving staff in the rollout process can make the difference between a tool that gathers dust and one that transforms operations. Empathy, she said, builds the kind of culture where innovation actually takes root.

The audience, a mix of tech leaders and managers, seemed to absorb the point. Many nodded as she described scenarios where rushed AI deployments led to resentment and low adoption rates. Milchanowski's core message was simple: machines can process information, but only humans can build trust. Without that trust, even the most dazzling technology will fall short.
