The integration of digital technology into social prescribing presents a promising avenue for enhancing community health and wellbeing. A recent qualitative study examined the perspectives of key stakeholders, including social prescribers, coordinators, and community providers, regarding the potential benefits and challenges associated with this technological shift.
Conducted in the Northwest of England, the study involved three focus group discussions with 18 participants from various sectors, including voluntary, community, faith, and social enterprises. Through thematic analysis, researchers identified eight key themes reflecting the diverse viewpoints of stakeholders. Among the advantages highlighted were improved capacity and resource management, better coordination of support services, increased access and equity, and enhanced outcome evaluation.
However, the study also uncovered significant challenges, including issues of digital illiteracy, financial constraints, and a lack of robust evidence supporting the effectiveness of digital solutions. Stakeholders noted that while digital social prescribing can facilitate streamlined referrals and improved data sharing, its success hinges on addressing disparities in technology access. This study underscores the need for targeted strategies to overcome barriers and fully realize the potential of digital technology in social prescribing.
