Finding Common Ground in the AI Risk Debate

The conversation about artificial intelligence risk has lost its footing. As AI systems grow more capable and start doing genuinely unsettling things, like breaching security systems and coordinating across message boards, the warnings about human extinction have grown louder. So have the accusations that those warnings are nothing but marketing.

We are stuck between two extremes. Either AI will probably kill us all, or anyone who says so is just selling something. Neither view captures what is actually happening, and letting them dominate public discussion sets the stage for bad policy.

A few points deserve attention.

The risk of AI wiping out humanity cannot be quantified. When lab employees put a number like ten percent on it, that number is guesswork dressed up as math. It imagines scenarios years away. Adding a percentage does not make it science.

That said, many people in Silicon Valley genuinely believe the danger is real. They are building systems smarter than humans and worry those systems could treat us as obstacles. It would be foolish to dismiss those fears outright, even if they remain speculation.

Researchers who speak up may trigger real consequences, including data center pauses and hearings. That could slow development just as companies need growth to justify their valuations.

Going public with these fears is not good marketing. If anything, it works against the product. But speaking out does build careers for whistleblowers, which is worth noting without invalidating their concerns.

Meanwhile, labs are pushing toward self-improving AI. That goal is not inevitable, but it is the backdrop for everything being argued right now.
