GlobalFoundries Inc., a major player in the semiconductor industry, has announced the creation of a dedicated business unit aimed at advancing quantum computing. The new division, called Quantum Technology Solutions, was launched on May 21 and is designed to scale up domestic manufacturing for utility-scale quantum systems. This move marks the company's official entry into the next generation of high-performance computing.
The unit will focus on producing complete hardware solutions, including quantum processor units, cryogenic read-out integrated circuits, and advanced packaging. By offering these components, GlobalFoundries is positioning itself as a key supplier for the emerging quantum industry. The company aims to move beyond just making chips and instead deliver full hardware packages that can be used by quantum computing firms.
This initiative comes as the demand for specialized manufacturing grows. Quantum computers require extremely low temperatures and unique materials, which creates new challenges for chip fabrication. GlobalFoundries is betting that its experience in producing complex chips for other markets will give it an edge in this new field. The company sees quantum technology as a long-term growth opportunity, especially as governments and private companies invest heavily in the sector. With this new unit, GlobalFoundries is trying to secure a spot in what could be a major part of the computing industry in the coming decades.
