Patients receiving forensic nursing care now have greater access to specialized imaging technology through seven new Cortexflo forensic imaging systems deployed across the health system.
The Cortexflo device is a handheld, non invasive imaging tool designed to document injuries with a high level of detail. It captures images using alternate light sources and specialized filters, which can reveal bruising, abrasions and other tissue damage that may not be visible to the naked eye, particularly on patients with darker skin tones. The technology is meant to support forensic nurses who collect evidence and document findings for patients who have experienced trauma, violence or abuse.
Forensic nursing combines clinical care with legal documentation. Nurses in this field often work with survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse and elder mistreatment. Accurate imaging can play a critical role in medical records and, in some cases, in legal proceedings.
The rollout places the systems at multiple locations across the network, allowing more patients to receive consistent imaging regardless of where they seek care. Staff members have been trained to operate the devices, and the images are stored securely within the patient record.
Health officials say the investment reflects a broader effort to improve services for vulnerable populations and to standardize how forensic evidence is collected. By equipping more sites with the same technology, the system aims to reduce disparities in care and ensure that documentation is thorough from the first point of contact.
