The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees has created a new leadership position dedicated to understanding how artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies are reshaping entertainment work. Jillian Arnold will serve as the union's first Labor and Technology Intelligence Officer, a role designed to track technological shifts and their consequences for workers across the United States and Canada.
Arnold's mandate centers on the crafts, jobs and working conditions of the union's members. She will examine how new tools affect the day to day realities of entertainment workers, from production crews to behind the scenes technicians, and will help the union anticipate changes rather than react to them after the fact.
The appointment signals a growing focus on technology across the labor movement. Unions representing creative and technical workers have increasingly turned their attention to AI, automation and digital production methods, seeking to ensure that members have a voice in how these tools are adopted. By establishing a dedicated intelligence role, the union aims to gather information, monitor developments and inform bargaining strategies with concrete analysis.
Arnold's work is expected to support contract negotiations and policy discussions by providing leadership with a clearer picture of where technology is heading and what it means for the workforce. The position also reflects a broader effort to prepare members for shifts in skill requirements and job duties as new systems enter studios, stages and production sites.
Union leaders described the creation of the role as a proactive step. Rather than waiting for technology to alter working conditions, the union intends to study emerging trends early and use that knowledge to protect members' interests. Arnold will coordinate with departments across the organization and serve as a central point for technology related research and strategy.
The appointment comes as entertainment workers on both sides of the border grapple with questions about AI's role in writing, animation, visual effects and production planning. Having a dedicated officer focused on these issues gives the union an internal resource for evaluating risks and opportunities as the industry continues to evolve.
