Kosciusko County Council Votes to Withhold Funding for Flock Cameras

Kosciusko County Council Votes to Withhold Funding for Flock Cameras

The Kosciusko County Council has approved three motions to withhold funding from Flock Cameras, the controversial license plate reading technology that has sparked debate across the community.

The council heard from hundreds of residents during a lengthy public session before casting their votes. Supporters of the cameras argued the system helps law enforcement solve crimes and track suspects. Opponents raised concerns about privacy, surveillance, and the potential for misuse of collected data.

The three motions each targeted different aspects of the funding, effectively cutting off financial support for the program. Council members who backed the measures said they were responding to mounting pressure from constituents who questioned whether the benefits of the technology outweighed the risks.

Residents who spoke during the meeting shared personal stories and opinions on both sides. Some cited cases where the cameras played a role in investigations. Others said they worried about constant monitoring and wanted assurances that data would not be shared with outside agencies.

The vote marks a significant shift for the county, which had previously moved forward with the technology. It remains unclear what will happen to cameras already installed or how the decision will affect ongoing cases that relied on the system.

County officials said they will review the impact of the funding cuts in the coming weeks.
