The artificial intelligence sector is often treated as a monolith by investors, but a look at the quarterly revenue trends of Marvell Technology and UiPath tells two very different stories. Marvell, a semiconductor giant, has long held a commanding lead in raw revenue, driven by its custom AI chips and data center networking gear. However, the latest numbers from UiPath suggest the automation software company is closing the gap at a surprising pace.
Marvell reported quarterly revenue of roughly $1.8 billion, a figure that dwarfs UiPath's $405 million. Yet the narrative shifts when you examine the growth rates. UiPath posted a 14% year-over-year increase in its most recent quarter, accelerating from a period of single-digit growth. This marks a sharp turnaround for a company that had struggled to convince Wall Street that its robotic process automation tools could scale beyond niche back-office tasks.
Marvell, by contrast, saw its revenue dip slightly compared to the same quarter last year, though its AI-specific segments remain robust. The company is heavily tied to hyperscale cloud builders like Amazon and Microsoft, which continue to invest in custom silicon. The challenge for Marvell is that its non-AI businesses, such as legacy storage and networking, are dragging down the headline number.
For investors, the divergence raises a key question. Marvell offers scale and deep integration with the AI hardware supply chain. UiPath offers a higher growth trajectory and a software model with better margins. Neither is a clear winner on all fronts. The revenue gap is still wide, but UiPath's acceleration suggests that the AI software layer is finally finding its footing. If that trend holds, the gap may shrink faster than many expect.
