Murray Independent adds SRO position to technology center

The Murray Police Department has partnered with the Murray Independent School District to establish a new School Resource Officer position dedicated specifically to the Murray/Calloway County Area Technology Center. This move expands law enforcement presence beyond the district's traditional elementary and secondary school buildings.

Officials stated that the new SRO will focus on the technology center campus, which serves high school students from both the city and county school systems. The officer's role includes building relationships with students, providing security during school hours, and serving as a resource for staff on safety protocols.

Murray Police Chief Jeff Liles emphasized that the position is not just about enforcement. The officer will also mentor students and help create a positive school climate. The technology center offers career and technical education programs, drawing a diverse group of students from across the region.

The school district and police department worked together to fund the role. The new SRO is expected to begin duties before the end of the current academic year. School leaders hope the presence of a dedicated officer will strengthen trust between law enforcement and the student body while ensuring a safe learning environment for all who attend the technology center.
