The Navy has significantly broadened its technology experimentation efforts, growing its portfolio of pilot projects to roughly 25 in 2025, with dozens more now underway in 2026. The expansion spans several high-priority areas, including artificial intelligence, edge computing and autonomous systems, reflecting a push to move emerging tools from concept to operational use more quickly.
The strategy behind the growth centers on running smaller, faster experiments rather than lengthy acquisition cycles. By testing technologies in realistic settings, the service can evaluate what works, discard what does not and scale successful efforts across the fleet. Officials describe the approach as a way to reduce risk while giving sailors and commanders hands-on experience with new capabilities.
The pilot portfolio touches on a range of missions. AI efforts focus on decision support and data analysis, edge computing aims to bring processing power closer to the fight, and autonomy programs explore uncrewed systems that can operate with less direct human involvement. Each project is designed with clear measures of effectiveness so leaders can judge whether to advance, adjust or end an effort.
The coming year will test whether this expanded experimentation can translate into lasting capability. With dozens of pilots in progress, the focus now shifts to evaluation, integration and the harder work of fielding these technologies at scale while keeping pace with rapid change.
