State officials have unveiled a new initiative to stop wrong-way drivers, a push that follows the tragic crash that killed Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor. The technology is designed to detect vehicles traveling the wrong direction on highways and alert both the driver and authorities before a collision occurs.
The system uses a combination of radar sensors and cameras mounted on overhead gantries. When a car enters an exit ramp or drives against traffic, the sensors trigger flashing LED signs that warn the driver. At the same time, an alert is sent to a traffic management center, which can dispatch police immediately. Some versions of the technology also activate flashing lights on the wrong-way vehicle itself, making it more visible to other drivers.
Trooper Trainor died in March when a wrong-way driver struck his cruiser on Route 3 in Marshfield. The crash highlighted a persistent problem on Massachusetts roads. According to state data, there have been hundreds of wrong-way driving incidents in recent years, many resulting in serious injuries or deaths.
Transportation officials say the new system will first be installed at high-risk locations, including interchanges and ramps known for confusion or poor lighting. The goal is to expand the technology statewide over the next few years. While no system can stop every mistake, officials believe this approach can cut down on the most dangerous incidents. The hope is that faster warnings and quicker police response will save lives.
