New technology allowing people who are paralyzed to use their hands

New technology allowing people who are paralyzed to use their hands

A groundbreaking clinical trial is offering new hope to people living with paralysis, with a technology that allows them to use their hands again. The experimental system uses a small implant placed directly on the brain's surface to read neural signals, which are then translated into commands that stimulate the muscles in the arm and hand.

Stephanie Still spoke with a patient participating in the study. The individual, who had been paralyzed for years, described the moment they were able to pick up a cup and drink without assistance for the first time since their injury. The patient noted that the sensation felt natural, as if the brain was simply remembering how to move the body.

The technology works by bypassing the damaged spinal cord. A computer chip decodes the person's intention to move, sending wireless signals to a sleeve worn on the forearm. This sleeve then delivers small electrical pulses to the muscles, causing them to contract in a coordinated sequence.

Researchers caution that the system is still in its early stages and is not a cure. The trial currently focuses on basic tasks like grasping objects and self-feeding. However, the results so far have been consistent, with several participants showing significant improvement in their ability to perform daily activities. The team hopes to expand the trial to include more patients and eventually refine the device for home use.
