Novo Nordisk (CPSE:NOVO B) Secures Long-Acting Injectable Technology In €1.165 Billion Nanexa Licensing Agreement

Novo Nordisk has entered a global licensing agreement with Swedish drug delivery company Nanexa, valued at up to 1.165 billion euros. The deal centers on Nanexa's PharmaShell technology, a platform designed to create long-acting injectable formulations that release medication gradually over extended periods.

Under the terms of the agreement, Novo Nordisk gains rights to develop and commercialize products using the PharmaShell system. The technology coats drug particles at the nanoscale, allowing precise control over how quickly or slowly a treatment enters the bloodstream. This approach could reduce how often patients need injections, a significant advantage for chronic conditions that currently require frequent dosing.

The partnership fits Novo Nordisk's broader strategy of investing in delivery methods that improve patient adherence. The company already dominates the market for diabetes and obesity treatments, and long-acting formulations represent a growing area of competition among pharmaceutical manufacturers.

Nanexa will receive upfront payments as well as potential milestone payments tied to development, regulatory and sales targets. The Swedish firm will also be eligible for royalties on any products that reach the market.

The agreement covers multiple therapeutic areas, though specific drug candidates were not disclosed. The deal remains subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. Neither company provided a timeline for when the first product from the collaboration might enter clinical trials.
