Swedish electric vehicle maker Polestar has decided not to challenge a U.S. government order that effectively bans the sale of its cars in the American market. According to a recent report, the company will formally exit the United States after extensive talks with the U.S. Department of Commerce failed to produce a compromise.
The ban stems from concerns over the use of Chinese-developed technology in Polestar vehicles. The automaker is owned by Volvo Car AB and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, and its cars rely heavily on software and components sourced from China. U.S. regulators have grown increasingly wary of such dependencies, citing national security risks. Rather than pursuing a lengthy legal battle, Polestar has chosen to accept the ruling and redirect its focus to other global markets.
This decision marks a significant shift for the brand, which had positioned the U.S. as a key growth region. Polestar had been selling its electric sedans and SUVs in America since 2020, building a small but loyal customer base. Now, existing owners will still receive service and support, but no new vehicles will be imported for sale. The company has not yet announced whether it will attempt to redesign its supply chain to comply with U.S. rules in the future.
For now, Polestar is concentrating on expanding in Europe and Asia, where regulatory hurdles are less severe. The move underscores the growing geopolitical tension between Washington and Beijing, and how it continues to reshape the global auto industry.
