Russia comes after Western technology as sanctions squeeze the economy

Senior European officials report that Russian intelligence agencies have sharply increased their attempts to acquire Western research and defense technology. As economic sanctions continue to squeeze Russia's industrial base, agents are using a mix of fake companies and cyber espionage to bypass restrictions.

According to multiple European security sources, the campaign has become more brazen in recent months. Russian operatives are setting up front firms in third countries to purchase sensitive equipment, particularly microchips, precision tools, and components used in missile guidance systems. At the same time, state-backed hackers are targeting defense contractors and research labs across Europe, seeking blueprints for advanced weapons and dual-use technologies.

One official described the effort as a "full-court press" to compensate for production gaps caused by the loss of Western imports. The stolen technology is reportedly being funneled into Russia's defense sector, where factories are struggling to maintain output of tanks, drones, and electronic warfare systems.

European counterintelligence agencies have responded by tightening export controls and sharing threat data more quickly. Several fake procurement networks have been disrupted in the past year, but officials admit the scale of the operation is hard to contain. "They are persistent and creative," one senior diplomat said. "Every time we close one door, they find a window."
