San Diego Unified leaders propose policy to limit technology in classrooms

San Diego Unified leaders propose policy to limit technology in classrooms

The initiative, introduced by district administrators, would limit non-educational device usage during instructional hours. This includes restricting personal smartphones, tablets, and other gadgets that often distract from lessons. Officials argue that while technology can enhance education, unchecked access leads to shorter attention spans, social isolation, and lower academic performance.

"We are not banning technology," a district spokesperson said. "We are creating boundaries so that devices serve learning, not undermine it."

The policy would require teachers to designate specific times for tech use, such as research or interactive assignments, while banning social media and gaming during class. Exceptions would be made for students with special needs or medical requirements.

Some parents have voiced concerns about emergency communication, but the district plans to keep phones accessible in backpacks or designated storage. The school board is expected to debate the measure before the vote, with implementation set for the fall if approved.

This move comes amid a broader national conversation about youth mental health and screen dependency. San Diego Unified, one of California's largest districts, hopes to set a precedent for mindful tech integration without outright prohibition.
