St. Mary’s University announces new Vice President for Information Services

St. Mary’s University has officially named Gwendolen “Gwen” M. Pechan as its next Vice President for Information Services, following a formal approval by the Board of Trustees during their meeting on Thursday. Pechan will step into the role, which oversees the university’s technology infrastructure, data management, and digital strategy, effective immediately.

In her new capacity, Pechan will be responsible for leading the university’s information technology division, ensuring that faculty, staff, and students have access to secure, innovative, and efficient digital tools. Her portfolio includes managing campus-wide network systems, cybersecurity protocols, and the integration of emerging technologies to support academic and administrative operations. The appointment comes as St. Mary’s continues to expand its online learning capabilities and modernize its IT framework to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving educational landscape.

Pechan brings over two decades of experience in higher education technology leadership to the position. She previously served as the Chief Information Officer at a regional liberal arts college, where she spearheaded a major cloud migration project and implemented data analytics programs that improved student retention rates. Colleagues describe her as a collaborative leader with a strong focus on aligning technology investments with institutional goals.

“Gwen’s deep understanding of the intersection between technology and education makes her an ideal fit for this critical role,” said a university spokesperson. Pechan holds a Master of Science in Information Systems from a private research university and has completed executive training in digital transformation. She is expected to begin her tenure immediately, working closely with the president’s cabinet to advance the university’s strategic priorities.
