Stretchable Display Tech Hits Record Brightness

Stretchable Display Tech Hits Record Brightness

A research team led by Professor Jiwoong Yang of the Department of Energy Science and Engineering at DGIST has developed the world's first foundational technology for an ultrahigh-resolution stretchable display that can bend and stretch like rubber while maintaining record levels of brightness.

The work addresses a long-standing tradeoff in flexible electronics. Stretchable screens usually sacrifice image quality or light output once they deform, because the materials that allow movement tend to scatter or absorb light. The new approach keeps pixels sharp and vivid even when the surface is pulled, twisted, or compressed.

According to the researchers, the display achieves brightness levels that surpass previous stretchable designs, while preserving the fine pixel density needed for ultrahigh resolution. That combination matters for applications such as wearable devices, curved automotive dashboards, biomedical sensors, and skin-mounted electronics that must conform to the human body without losing readability.

The team says the technology is still at the foundational stage, meaning further work is needed to scale production and ensure durability over repeated stretching cycles. Still, the results suggest that future screens may no longer be rigid rectangles. They could instead behave like elastic films, wrapping around objects and moving with the user.

The findings were published in a peer-reviewed journal, though the team has not announced a timeline for commercialization. Industry observers note that stretchable displays remain a niche area, but breakthroughs in brightness and resolution could accelerate interest from device makers looking for new form factors.
