Teaching seniors the basics with new technology

Teaching seniors the basics with new technology

For close to 15 years, the Basic program at the Portage Lake District Library has been a vital community resource, dedicated to helping seniors connect with the modern world through new technology. This initiative provides essential, patient guidance on everything from smartphone fundamentals to video calling with family and navigating online services safely.

The program’s success stems from its personalized, one-on-one approach. Volunteer instructors work at each participant’s pace, demystifying devices and applications that can often seem intimidating. Lessons are tailored to practical, everyday needs, such as setting up email, using social media to stay in touch, managing online banking, or accessing telehealth appointments.

This focus on foundational skills does more than just teach operational know-how; it fosters confidence and independence. Many seniors report feeling less isolated and more capable of managing daily tasks in an increasingly digital society. The library’s welcoming environment ensures learners feel comfortable asking questions without judgment.

As technology continues to evolve, the commitment of programs like this one remains crucial. They ensure that older adults are not left behind, but are instead active, engaged participants in the digital age, able to leverage tools that enrich their lives and maintain vital connections.
