UTC to play key role in $25 million CARTA autonomous vehicle project

UTC to play key role in $25 million CARTA autonomous vehicle project

A major federal investment is set to put Chattanooga at the forefront of autonomous vehicle research, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is positioned to be a core driver of the project. The Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority, known as CARTA, has secured a $25 million grant to launch a new generation of transit technology in the city's downtown core. While the funding will go toward deploying the vehicles and building out the necessary infrastructure, UTC's involvement goes much deeper than simply providing a test track.

The university will take on the central roles of research, education, and workforce development tied to the initiative. That means faculty and students will not just observe the technology in action. They will be tasked with studying how the autonomous shuttles interact with pedestrians, cyclists, and traditional traffic. The data collected will help shape safety protocols and efficiency models that could be used by other mid-sized cities looking to adopt similar systems.

Beyond the lab work, the project is expected to create a pipeline for local talent. UTC will develop curriculum and training programs aimed at preparing students for careers in advanced mobility, a field that is growing quickly but often lacks a clear entry point for new workers. The university's involvement also signals a broader shift in how public transit projects are evaluated, with academic partners now seen as essential to long-term success, not just as an afterthought. For Chattanooga, the grant is a chance to prove that a smaller city can lead on innovation, and UTC is set to be the intellectual engine behind that effort.
