WILLIAMSBURG - A recent review of how students use technology in Williamsburg-James City County schools found that devices are a regular part of most classroom instruction. However, school officials emphasized that the main concern should be how technology supports learning, not just how much time students spend on screens.
The findings were presented during the School Board's June 2 work session. The review looked at how often and in what ways students use laptops and tablets during the school day. According to officials, the goal is to ensure that technology is used as a tool for education rather than a distraction.
Board members discussed the balance between digital learning and traditional methods. Some raised questions about whether students are spending too much time on devices, while others noted that technology can help personalize instruction and engage students in new ways.
The district plans to continue monitoring usage and will look for ways to improve how technology is integrated into lessons. Officials said they want to make sure that any screen time is purposeful and directly tied to learning objectives. The conversation is expected to continue at future board meetings as the district refines its approach to digital learning.
