A new state-of-the-art cleanroom facility has opened at Binghamton University, designed to train over 100 students annually and strengthen the regional semiconductor workforce. The 1,500-square-foot lab, located in the university's Innovative Technologies Complex, is equipped with specialized tools for microfabrication and nanoscale research.
The cleanroom will serve as a hands-on training hub for undergraduates and graduate students pursuing degrees in electrical engineering, materials science, and physics. University officials say the facility directly addresses a critical shortage of skilled technicians and engineers in the chip manufacturing industry, which has seen increased demand due to federal investments in domestic semiconductor production.
Students will learn processes such as photolithography, etching, and thin-film deposition, gaining practical experience that mirrors real-world cleanroom environments. The lab also supports faculty research into next-generation electronics and sensors.
Local industry partners have welcomed the initiative, noting that a trained local talent pool reduces recruitment costs and accelerates innovation. The university plans to expand the cleanroom's capacity in phases, with the goal of certifying hundreds of workers for regional fabrication plants over the next five years.
