PATCO has moved a step closer to modernizing its fare collection system, with crews now installing one new tap-to-pay gate at each station along the line. The pilot program gives riders a chance to test the contactless payment technology before a wider rollout.
The new gates accept credit cards, debit cards, and mobile wallets, allowing passengers to simply tap their device or card at the reader instead of fumbling for a paper ticket or reloading a travel card. Each station now has a single gate equipped with the system, while the remaining gates still use the traditional swipe or insert method.
Transit officials say the test phase will help them gather data on reliability, transaction speed, and rider satisfaction. If the trial goes well, PATCO plans to upgrade all gates across the system. The move aligns with a broader industry trend as more transit agencies ditch magnetic stripe cards in favor of faster, more secure tap-to-pay options.
Riders are encouraged to use the new gates and provide feedback. No timeline has been set for a full system conversion, but the installation marks a clear shift toward a cashless, card-friendly future for the commuter rail line.
