Tech Change: A Faculty Survival Guide from the IT Side - Faculty Focus | Higher Ed Teaching & Learning

Higher education is in a constant state of technological flux. New learning management systems, updated classroom tools, and shifting security protocols arrive every semester. For faculty, this can feel like a relentless wave of disruption, leading to what many call "change fatigue." But according to IT professionals, there is a better way to navigate this cycle without burning out.

The key is shifting from a mindset of resistance to one of partnership. IT departments are not trying to complicate teaching; they are often responding to security threats, accessibility requirements, or infrastructure upgrades. Faculty can reduce frustration by asking two simple questions early: "What problem does this solve?" and "What will I lose if we do not adopt this?" Getting clear answers helps separate necessary changes from fads.

Another practical strategy is to identify a "tech champion" within your department. This person works closely with IT to test new tools before a full rollout, providing real classroom feedback. This reduces the chance of a system failing mid-lecture. Faculty should also request hands-on training that is specific to their discipline, not generic overviews. A biology professor needs different workflows than a history professor.

Finally, embrace incremental adoption. You do not need to master every feature on day one. Pick one new tool or workflow per semester. IT staff appreciate faculty who are honest about their capacity. When you treat technology change as a collaborative project rather than a mandate, you reclaim a sense of control. The goal is not to become an IT expert. The goal is to let technology serve your teaching, not the other way around.
